Special Needs Dentistry in Taos, NM

Understanding Special Needs Dentistry

Oral health plays a vital role in maintaining overall wellbeing, but for individuals with special needs, accessing quality dental care may come with unique challenges. Whether due to physical, developmental, cognitive, behavioral or emotional conditions, patients with special needs often require customized dental services and a compassionate approach. Northern New Mexico Dental Center is proud to provide inclusive care in a welcoming environment where every patient feels safe, understood and respected.

Special needs dentistry is the branch of dental care focused on serving patients whose conditions may affect their ability to receive traditional care. These conditions may include autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, developmental disabilities, Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis and other medical or behavioral disorders. Our dentists and team recognize the wide range of care requirements among these individuals and takes extra steps to ensure each visit is positive and productive.

We understand that every patient is unique. Dr. Kellie Harris and Dr. Kayci Harris work closely with patients and caregivers to create tailored treatment plans that meet each person’s needs and comfort level. This includes modifying procedures, using desensitization techniques, offering additional communication aids and adjusting appointment times to minimize stress. We also offer additional time during visits when necessary, allowing us to proceed at the patient’s pace.

Our Approach to Compassionate, Professional Care

Our goal is to make dentistry as easy and accessible as possible for every patient. From the moment you walk through our doors, you will be welcomed by a team that is attentive to your concerns and respectful of your preferences. We take time to clearly explain every step of the appointment and encourage caregivers to ask questions or share helpful information about the patient’s behavior, sensitivities or communication style. When appropriate, we may recommend sedation options, such as nitrous oxide, to help the patient relax and feel more comfortable. We also coordinate with physicians and other healthcare providers to ensure the safety and effectiveness of any procedures we perform. Your trust is important to us, and we will do everything we can to build a foundation of comfort and reliability.

Great treatment from everyone. Procedure was difficult but as usual Dr. K handled the process amazingly well. Judith is walking me through new finance program and her expertise & professional explanation helped much. I’m thankful that I might be able to go the next step for new dentures.
