Oral Hygiene in Taos, NM

Daily Habits for a Healthy Smile

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your smile and your overall health. While our dentists and team are here to support your oral care during professional cleanings and exams, what you do at home plays a vital role in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. A consistent, thoughtful oral hygiene routine not only helps prevent cavities and gum disease but also supports fresh breath, strong enamel and long-term dental wellness.

To begin, brush your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day — once in the morning and again before bed. For optimal results, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Take at least two minutes to clean all surfaces of your teeth, including the outer, inner and chewing surfaces. Be gentle but thorough, and do not forget to brush your tongue to reduce bacteria and bad breath.

Flossing is equally important and should be done once daily. It removes food particles and plaque from between the teeth and below the gumline — areas that your toothbrush cannot reach. Flossing before bedtime is especially helpful, as it cleans your mouth thoroughly before you sleep, when saliva production slows and bacterial growth increases.

Diet & Lifestyle Tips

The foods and beverages you consume also influence your oral health. Try to maintain a balanced diet that includes plenty of vegetables, fruits, lean proteins and whole grains. Limit your intake of sugary snacks and acidic drinks such as soda or fruit juice. These can wear down enamel and contribute to decay. Drinking water throughout the day not only supports hydration but also helps rinse away food particles and neutralize acids in the mouth.

Tobacco products, including cigarettes and chewing tobacco, are harmful to both your teeth and gums. Avoiding these products can help prevent gum disease, tooth discoloration and even oral cancer.

Routine Professional Care

Even with excellent at-home care, it is important to schedule regular checkups at Northern New Mexico Dental Center. We recommend visiting every six months for a professional cleaning and examination. These visits allow our dentists and team to remove hardened plaque (tartar), detect potential problems early and provide guidance tailored to your unique dental needs.

If you have specific concerns — such as tooth sensitivity, bleeding gums or persistent bad breath — do not wait for your next routine visit. Contact our office for a personalized consultation.

Kayci Harris fit me in for a dental crown that was kind of an emergency, because I was passing through Taos when a chunk of a tooth came out and I had a deadline to be elsewhere. Dr. Harris spoke clearly to me about what timing was out of her control, but as it turned out, the timing worked, and the staff made it all go smoothly. My lower jaw is difficult to numb, but Dr Harris was patient and kind, and we got it done. I very much appreciate her willingness to answer questions, and her direct and honest approach.
